90's Hardcore Scores

Only one post so far this month?!? Bare with me folks, I'll be back getting stuff up here more regularly soon. A new job and trying to fit in some much needed social time with friends has left me with little time to blog. My passion for it hasn't dwindled though believe me and as usual the records are still coming in thick and fast. Anyway, you didn't come here to read about me, on to the records.

So a few weeks ago I noticed on eBay a dude was selling off a pretty hefty collection. I think the metal records he had were what I noticed first, but sure enough like most of our metal brothers it soon became clear he had a decent smattering of hardcore records tucked in the collection too.

Madball - Set It Off

I can't tell you how excited I was to see Madballs awesome debut full length sitting there for sale. I've wanted this ever since I started collecting again but it rarely shows up. I wasn't going to let it escape this time and I put in an absurd bid that I knew no one was going to match. Boom it was mine! No fancy coloured wax just a classic record on black vinyl.

Much to my surprise bareing in mind the age of the record I was pleased to find that the record still contained the sticker that's advertised on the front of the record which was also a nice touch.

Madball - Demonstrating My Style

The good times didn't end there, not only was the guy selling Set It Off but he also had a copy of the follow up and equally tricky to find 'Demonstrating My Style'. I'd got the two Madball LP's I didn't have in one foul swoop!

On further inspection of the records being sold there was a few more I wanted, in the end I nabbed two more.

Black Train Jack - No Reward

Mike over at 'The One Thing That Still Holds True' wrote about Black Train Jack a couple of years ago. At the time I was intrigued because I remembered the name but had honestly never heard the band before. I listened to a couple of tracks online somewhere and made note to pick up a copy of their records if I ever got the chance.

Two years later I had the chance to pick up both records but I took my eye off the ball and missed out on the bands second record 'You're Not Alone' and someone beat me to it. I did grab the debut record 'No Reward' though. I've really enjoyed listening to the record actually, it's good stuff. I can see why at the time the band would have kinda got lost in the mix though. I still want that second record!!

Earth Crisis - Gomorrah's Season Ends

Driven by the price I also figured it would be rude not to pick up an original copy of Earth Crisis 'Gomorrah' Season Ends'. Another good record. I pretty much lost touch with Earth Crisis after 'Breed The Killers' but I do like this early stuff from the band.

In the end a great little score of four.

Delayed Disorder

Shiiiiit...sorry for the delay folks. It's a long story but basically I've been unable to log on to my account as I smashed my phone to bits accidentally. Anyway I'm still sans phone but have at least remedied the logging on to BlogSpot situation for now.
I'm super behind now of course and have so much shit to blog about that it's difficult to know where to start so I'm gonna just dive in with some 7" records first (I've already written up three more posts so we're getting serious over here) before I just lose the desire to bother completely.

A while ago when writing about a Vision Of Disorder record I mentioned that I was looking to fill some spaces in my V.O.D collection. Willem came to me straight away and offered a couple of pieces I needed and I took him up on the offer.

Vision Of Disorder - Still

Put out in 1995 on Striving For Togetherness Records this is the green version of the record. I believe this is the second press of the record with the blue and black versions being the first press. I have no idea of pressing numbers for this record though and actually didn't know there was a green version until Willem offered this one. This joins my black copy of the record so I still need to add a blue at some point.

Vision Of Disorder/Uzumaki/Dive - Split

This release is slightly less conventional and is a split between three bands. V.O.D and two Japanese bands Uzumaki and Dive. I presume this was put together for a tour but I could be way off. There's also a couple of similar releases with other bands. I'm sure Willem probably knows more about these releases. 750 were made and I believe that there's varying colours within that 750. This is the white cover and white vinyl version numbered 296. Vision of Disorder contribute 2 songs here Landslide and Twelve Steps To Nothing split over two records whilst the other bands add a track each.

Madball - Been There, Done That

Looking through Willem's list of records for sale (he has loads you should really take a look here) I also noticed he had a copy of this Madball 7" so I picked that up two just for the hell of it really as it's one I've never had. Standard black vinyl but I can never have enough Madball, it also comes on clear, red, blue and white vinyl.

Fixation On A Baby Gopal

A few weeks ago off the back of those Between The Buried and Me represses I visited the Victory Records webstore to see what else was going down with this once great label. I clicked on the 'vinyl' section and boom there it was a recent repress of a record I really liked in the 90's.

Deadguy - Fixation On A Co-Worker

Back in the mid to late 90's this band was right up my street, although it wasn't this record the bands 1995 debut I heard first, it was the EP that came a year later 'Screamin' With The Deadguy Quintet' that I remember buying (from a market stall weirdly) purely because I'd heard the bands name touted around and thought it was cool. That EP was decent but this full length is much better.

Victory do another good job on this record in terms of packaging and this looks really great. I wonder if they have any plans to release 'Screamin' With..' it was originally released as a 10" (yuck!) but a 12" release would be nice.

I was fortunate enough to pick up the rarest colour version Clear with Black Smoke limited to 100 copies. The other pressing numbers are : Pink limited to 409 copies ,Red limited to 377 copies and Yellow limited to 162 copies.

As much as I quite like the album cover is it me or would this insert picture have worked better? Anyway, as is usually the case I wasn't going to order just one record from the states and it was nice to see Victory had a copy of a record I'd been looking to pick up on vinyl for a while. A record that I dare say only myself and possibly Marcus would even remotely care about in 2013.

Baby Gopal - Baby Gopal

As this record hasn't been repressed I can only think that Victory still have copies of this kicking around from 1996 when it was released, that's not surprising though as this is far from the standard style the label where knocking out at the time. This is girl lead indie rock which is pretty far removed from your Snapcase and Earth Crisis releases. I've always quite liked this though.

Two girls , two guys, 90's alternative wardrobes - marvellous. Baby Gopal featured the rather gorgeous Sri Kesava who I met once when she was playing in Shelter in around 2002, she was just as gorgeous in real life and even complimented how my physique looked (back when I had one) in the Shelter shirt I'd just bought. I tell you this because I believe she was engaged to or married to Ray Cappo who she said this right in front of, Ray was polite but I don't think entirely impressed. Jake 1 - Cappo 0 haha
My flat mate bought her solo offering 'Gravity Reminds Me' at that show and I always regretted not picking one up as that was also pretty good.

Released on Pink vinyl I think this was the only colour pressed. Although on taking a look at Discogs it seems the record was also pressed on Orange by an Italian label and also given the title 'Fearless'. Pleased to pick this up anyway and in 2013 I still quite like it.

Modern Life has Buried Me

So record collector / record blogger logic here. You walk into a record shop with some cash in your pocket and don't find a huge amount you want, you still have to leave with a record right?? So if you have cash in your pocket, don't find a huge amount you want BUT also have a loyalty card for said shop that involves some discount, well that means you have to leave with two records right? Yep that's definitely the record collector maths. Knew you guys would be with me on this one.

That's how it was a few weeks ago when I picked up these two records. I'd really enjoyed the Between The Buried And Me debut I'd picked up a while ago so thought it only right I also add the follow up to the collection.

Between The Buried And Me - The Silent Circus

This record originally came out in 2003 but this is a 2011 repress of the album from Victory Records. On double LP this is I believe what the pressing info calls the 'Peach' colour variant. I dunno how apt that is though, looks more like 'gobstopper' to me.

I hadn't listened to this band for years till recently but I've definitely enjoyed these records with this second one being the better of the two. I've never heard anything past the next record Alaska but I might have a listen to some of the later stuff now.

The gatefold packaging looks nice. Victory have done a decent job of these reissues, which is good as I have another on the way from them I'm quite looking forward to.

Modern Life Is War - Fever Hunting

I honestly had no intention of buying this record. I liked Modern Life Is War's three albums first time round don't get me wrong, especially Witness, but it had been around 6 years since their last release and something just told me that this record would be terrible. I read a few reviews to the contrary of course but dismissed it still. Of course, that afternoon when it was in front of me I just thought "Fuck It" and picked it up regardless.

In actual fact Modern Life Is War haven't missed a beat in the years they've been away and the chants of 'Old Fears, New Frontiers' that bring this record crashing in set the tone for a good comeback record and a pretty natural follow up to Midnight In America.

The record it's self comes on this Olive green colour vinyl. It's not exactly limited though (that's what happens when you dismiss a record early) with 3500 copies on this colour. The record must have sold well though as Deathwish are now onto a second pressing.

The record also comes with a full size booklet with the lyrics to each song taking up a double page. Like it, more records should have these.

Eleven Random Records

I'm gonna take the easy way out and once again do a post with a load of random 7"s all together. There's just nothing remarkable about any of these to really warrant taking the time to do individual posts. Not to say they aren't decent records of course, but I've got other stuff to get posted up here that I'm more excited about.
It's all so random I actually don't know where to start. Let's kick off with two from Revelation Records.

Sick Of It All - S/T. The 1997 repress.

Texas Is The Reason - S/T. One of the better bands from that era of Rev releases for me.

Next some more recent Sick Of It All. Death To Tyrants on clear, with a nice little etched Alleyway Crew dragon on the front. I think clear was the most common pressing of this.

Off! - Compared To What b/w Rotten Apple. This is on some proper heavy duty vinyl.

On to two releases I got from Commitment Records UK. First I finally got round to checking out and buying Losin' It - Danger Zone that I saw Mario raving about on his blog.

Whilst picking that up I also bagged this compilation featuring bands like xCurraheex, Enough and Step Aside. Youth Crew 2012 from Positive and Focused Records. The centre labels pretty amusing. I don't know why i didn't pick up Provider - Wasteland whilst i was getting these as I've been meaning to buy it.

So next on to 3 records I bought for 30p a piece...30p!! Can't even buy a chocolate bar for 30p these days, that's value folks!!!
Breaker Breaker - Demo

Blue Monday - What's Done Is Done

The Damage Done - Never Wash Away on blue / 500.

And finally two old releases, one because I was talking to someone about this band but couldn't actually remember what they sounded like. Onion - S/T on Crisis

Billingsgate - Reach Out. What a weird looking band, I can only think these guys got together because they were the only guys who could play instruments in their town, I don't think I've ever seen a band so mismatched in the looks/style department. And don't get me started on the guy smoking a cigarette on the front. Weird.
